Founder's Day Celebration
Wednesday, September 27, 2006
Ninety years ago, Bishop Robert Carter Jett, teachers, students, and others connected to the school gathered on the front steps of Main (now Jett) to celebrate the opening, the founding of VES. They gathered to celebrate the culmination of Jett’s dream that began ten years before in 1906.
Ninety years later, the VES community will gather again on the front steps of Jett to celebrate Jett’s dream. We will take the time to reflect on the ten year process that began with a sketch on a napkin during a train ride to the opening of the school in 1916. We will also take the time to celebrate our alumni with three awards to four alumni. Ms. Sarah Mitchell ’00 and Mr. Christopher Pollard ’92 will receive the Young Bishop Award. The Outstanding Service Award will be presented to Mr. David Blair Hagan ’74 and The Distinguished Alumnus Award will be presented to Mr. W. Tayloe Murphy, Jr. ’49.
We will also take the time to look ahead to 2016. Jett’s dream took ten years to come to fruition and we intend to mimic his journey and look ahead to see where we want VES to be in 2016.
We also want to encourage you to use this date to remember the Old 160 and the memories you have of this hallowed place. Raise a glass, have some friends over, and remember all that VES meant to you. If you do get together with friends, take some pictures and send them to me so I can post them on this site.
We hope that in future years Founder’s Day will become a day of celebration here on campus and throughout the VES community. Thank you for all that you have done for VES and remember,
Once a Bishop, Always a Bishop!
