Connor Bell ’09 has been named a Distinguished Finalist by the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. The Barron Prize honors outstanding young leaders who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet.Connor is one of five students across the U.S. chosen for this honor, out of a pool of nearly 400 applicants. He will receive $500 to be applied to his higher education or his service work.
Connor founded the John H. Bell LiveStrong Jamboree, a twenty kilometer bike ride and fundraiser in honor of his father, who was killed in a tragic biking accident two years ago.The inaugural event drew over 100 biking enthusiasts, from seasoned riders to children on tricycles.Connor rallied local sponsors and businesses to cover the full cost of the event, so that all money made from the event could go directly to the Lance Armstrong Foundation.Connor raised $8,000, and looks forward to continuing the event. “In the year I spent planning and orchestrating the Jamboree, I learned how to open up to people and how to ask for support,” said Connor. “Knowing that I have behind me has made me a stronger and more confident person.”
The Barron Prize was founded in 2001 by author T.A. Barron and was named for his mother, Gloria Barron. Each year, the Barron Prize selects ten winners and five Distinguished Finalists nationwide.Half of the honorees have focused on helping their communities and fellow human beings; half have focused on protecting the health and sustainability of the environment.
