First steps toward character and personal maturity – the most successful students, those who gain the most out of the experience, are those who have mentors.
- Each ninth grader will be in single gender groups of six that will meet daily during orientation and weekly during the school year.
- Monthly advisor group activities such as academic support, spiritual/values experiences, community service, and a healthy dose of fun and fellowship.
- A Junior Mentors program will allow upperclassmen and women to offer even more support to the new student.
- Regular weekly planning sessions
First steps toward academic achievement – adding breadth and depth to classroom discussion and course content.
- This will be accomplished through a focused, interdisciplinary teaching team and schedule.
- Relevant curricular themes will be taught simultaneously in English, History, Computer Science, Religion, and Fine Arts.
- Resource materials will introduced when most relevant and appropriate and designed to impact and add to the course lessons.
First steps toward independent thinking – a structured program helping ninth graders make a successful transition and become lifelong learners.
- This will be accomplished through the use of integrated study skills across the curriculum.
- The use of a common daily academic planner or organizer.
- Lessons in time management, organization, and classroom tasks such as note taking, questioning, and writing.
The initiative is wrapped around VES’s mission statement of rigorous academic training and vigorous individual attention in a spiritual and ethical environment. The members of the faculty are dedicated to upholding that tradition as well as providing the best learning and living environment for our students.
