VES hosted another terrific Reunion Weekend on June 6-8. Despite soaring temperatures, more than 200 alumni enjoyed an exciting weekend highlighted by the customary Friday night Bar-B-Q and a Saturday night dinner honoring retiring Senior Master Jim Hopkins.
Class of 2003
Earle Betts ’68 served as the National Reunion Chair and presented a check for $210,000.00 raised by the reunion classes. The class of 1958 and Class Chair Lloyd Horton were celebrated on their 50th Reunion as were the class of 1983 and Class Chair Parker Hale for their 25th Reunion. The Class of 1973 was recognized for bring the biggest class back on their reunion with a total of 24 alumni returning. The ’73 class chairs were Bob Gorrell and Jamie Johnson.
Other superlatives were extended to Frank Morton ’73 and Dr. John Risher ’28. Morton was the alumnus who traveled the furthest, coming all the way from Philomath, Oregon. Risher, who joined the group for Saturday night’s dinner, was celebrating his 80th Reunion and was the oldest alumnus in attendance.
During Saturday night’s dinner, Jim Hopkins was presented with a collection of memories and anecdotes from many of his former students bound together in a book. Jim then took the podium and talked about the great aspects of VES that he will both take with and leave behind.
All VES classes whose graduation year ends in a four or nine should save the date for 2009’s Reunion on the weekend of June 5-7.
