Pope Foundation Gift Completes Vision for Johnson Field

During the tenure of VES headmaster and rector, William Gibson Pendleton (1920-28), an unsightly ravine on VES property was transformed into what is now known as Johnson Field (named in memory of J. Dunlop Johnson, VES class of 1918, by his father). For many years thereafter, it was widely considered to be among the most beautiful independent school football field and track facilities in Virginia, this despite a serious and recurring drainage problem and an odd shaped and sized track because of the limited space upon which it was built.

Thanks to a recent gift from the John William Pope Foundation of Raleigh, North Carolina, the final project in the complete transformation of Johnson Field into a modern multi-use venue is nearing completion.

The construction of John W. Pope, Jr. Memorial Stadium is the crowning achievement in the renovation of historic Johnson Field. The brick stadium building will feature game seating, restrooms, a concession area and viewing boxes for both home and visiting coaches.

VES is pleased to honor the memory of alumnus and former trustee of the school, John W. Pope, Jr. ’69 and appreciates its continuing partnership with the Pope Foundation.
